It might be relevant to note that I am a 55 year old man. Active and not old-fashioned, but 55. I feel like this hotel experience is for younger folks. For example, the nice man at the front desk greeted me with a "sup dude?" when I approached to check in.
A dark lobby with loud music in which one is discouraged from bringing food or coffee from outside the hotel. I did not purchase any food or beverage at the hotel, but I might have enjoyed my bagel and tea Sunday morning at one of their spacious tables, generally occupied by a diverse cast tapping away at laptops.
The lobby did not feel welcoming.
Spacious rooms decorated in a modern masculine dorm-room aesthetic. Linens and towels are good quality. Walls are painted dark and the lighting is oddly scarce: a dim overhead bulb by the door, a swing-arm lamp over the desk, and a small lamp by the bed.
There is a turntable in the room and a few vinyls, but the sound quality from the speaker made it more of a curiosity than a usable musical source.
There is no free coffee or tea in the room, and with a resort fee tacked on, I expected that would be included. I was not quite clear at all on what the resort fee covered, as there are essentially no free amenities other than the gym that I could discern.
Honestly I was a little afraid to use the bathrobe for fear I might be charged for its use.
Openable windows, good shades and shutters kept the light out and the fresh air flowing.
The shower head comes straight down from the ceiling and while the pressure is great, that makes it hard to wash. Also the shower itself was a small walk-in with no tub in my room.
The hallways are also dimly lit, so not suitable for folks with visual impairment.
As far as location goes, it's a great spot but I have enjoyed staying a little farther uptown to be closer to Grand Central Terminal on 42nd Street.
Fortunately for me I had lots to do and did not spend much time at the Ace. I will not be back but I am sure they will continue to be successful based on their location and the popularity of their style. I wish them the best and will stay a little further uptown.
I didn't love the low lighting and lack of outlets in the rooms. The built-in desk/bed thing wasn't stable, and there was mold in the shower.
I would stay here again.
Edit: I shared my feedback with the hotel and they responded to each and every one of my concerns. This bolsters my confidence that they'll only get better.
I read the reviews that have 5 stars. I guess we just got the worst rooms. Is it because we use the corporate’s rate?
