I contacted Christopher Kelly four weeks before in March as I was searching for a private tour of Vezelay abbey. I have been interested in its history since watching Kenneth Clarks TV documentary “Civilisation” in 1972. I asked for a 3 hour private guided tour on its history and its architecture and its influence on Europes “Civilisation”. Our group of four contained two English speakers and two French speakers, so I asked if he could flip between the two languages so that we could equally understand his information. All of this he could do and more. We agreed on a price for a three hour tour and at my suggestion I sent half as a bank transfer before we left Australia and paid the rest in cash outside the basilica at the end of the tour.
We met him in the Maison for a talk and demonstration of the architecture and planning and mathematics that made it special. He explained the role of Vezelay as a starting point of pilgrimages to Santiago that took place a thousand years ago and why they were important. He showed us a film ( that I think he helped make) that explained a lot about the light and the spiritual reasons behind it all. Then Christopher took us to the basilica and showed us the tympanum and explained its positive nature and contrasted that with other tympanums at other famous churches in the region. Then he took us inside and showed us the basilica including the contrast between the body of the church and the choir. Then we saw some of the carvings at the top of the columns that usually told stories from the bible. The one we spent most time on was a story of Cain from Genesis.
In short the three hour tour was thrilling and packed with information. My thanks to Christopher Kelly, our guide.

We signed up for the tour at the suggestion of our hotel, but didn’t have any major expectations ourselves. Two hours later, we walked away completely blown away by the experience and in particular, by the extensive knowledge of our guide. She was absolutely brilliant in her retelling of the Basilica’s rich history. And we had her all to ourselves for two hours, which felt like a real steal. Absolutely essential if one is to begin to appreciate just how magnificent and consequential this historic site is. Many thanks to the wonderful staff!

Plus qu'une visite, un voyage et une initiation...
J'avais visité de nombreuses fois la Basilique. Jamais cela n'avait provoqué l'émotion que m'a procuré cette visite-ci.
Notre guide, Irlandais d'origine, a su nous introduire à la dimension symbolique et au sentiment du sacré qui ont inspiré les bâtisseurs de cette église et qu'ils ont inscrit dans la pierre. En saisissant leur vision de la place de l'homme dans l'univers, entre monde naturel et transcendance, nous devenons leurs frères et sœurs à travers temps et espace.
Merci à notre guide de nous avoir fait partager sa passion avec tant d'enthousiasme et de gentillesse (en dépassant largement les 2h de visite annoncés). C'était un beau moment...

Une visite passionnante le 30.10.2023 où nous avons découvert les fondements sous tous les aspects de la basilique Sainte Marie Madeleine. Une présentation très vivante, très précise qui donne envie à venir découvrir cette lumière dans la basilique, Un merveilleux film d'animation au début, ensuite dans "la cave" l'explication du jeu de la lumière, sur la construction de la basilique , puis la visite sur les points essentiels dans la basilique, tout cela présenté et structuré qui nous fait comprendre le rôle de l'Humain et sa compréhension du Divin dans la reálisation et l'expression de ce fabuleux ouvrage.Une visite, un voyage à faire de manière inconditionnel...

Je recommande fortement la visite de la basilique de Vezelay avec la Maison du Visiteur. Christopher nous a captivé pendant presque 2 heures !!! Architecture, histoire, religion, spiritualité poésie, nature s'entremêlent dans son récit pour nous faire découvrir ce lieu sublime.
La visite démarre dans les sous-sols de la maison du visiteur... mais je n'en dis pas plus. A découvrir

C'est vraiment par là qu'il faut commencer avant toute visite à Vezelay.
Nous avons été guidé par un bénévole extraordinaire : Christopher. Un puits de connaissance, un passionné, il connaît l'histoire de Véselay et la basilique dans le moindre détail. Tour à tour historien, architecte, il en connaît aussi un rayon sur les religions. Une pointe de spiritualité et beaucoup d'attention pour le visiteur. Il nous a transporté dans sa passion. Nous recommandons vivement.

Wir kamen mittags per Rad nach Vezelay. Zu unserem großen Glück konnten wir direkt um 14:30 mit einer Führung die Basilika auf besondere Weise erfahren und erleben. Der Audiovision Film und die Erklärungen am Modell vermitteln einen tiefen Zugang zur Geschichte der Basilika. Viel besser als einen Text im Buch zu lesen ist der persönliche Guide !
Kleiner Nachteil: während der Bauarbeiten ist die Akkustik schlecht. Wir würden uns ein Headset für den Guide und Kopfhörer wünschen. Dafür würde wir auch 3-4 € zusätzlich zahlen.

Nous étions 4 pour la visite du solstice d’hiver. Temps déplorable mais visite magnifique adaptée à nos envies et aux circonstances. Des explications fouillées et précises. Beaucoup d’échanges et d’interactions. Des réponses à toutes nos questions.

It was surprising to experience the guides of 'La Maison du Visiteur'. Christopher in particular guided us with great passion in a world of symbolism, wisdom, light and love in an accessible warm hearted en calm way. He broadened our understanding of the Basilica of Light wich made me feel how heaven and earth are intertwined in this building and although the Basilica dates back to the 12th century, it is so alive and 'up to date' in our contemporary world. An absolute must to be immersed in this world by the guides of 'La Maison du Visiteur' and to be enchanted and amazed. Nadia

I registered a group of sixteen 7th graders (niveau du 5em in France) for a mini-pilgrimage, a visit of the Cathedral and a workshop at the “Maison du Visiteur” with Christopher Kelly.
All day, these students eagerly progressed from one activity to another: experiencing the climb from the Church of Saint Jacques (outside Vezelay) where pilgrims of another epoch deposed all they had to proceed humbly and in equality on the last stretch to the Basilica; the walk along field-hedges separating fields of crops, through a village and towards the clearing where Bernard de Clairvaux called for the Second Crusade. From there, they made a halt in the tiny, 800-year old Franciscan Chapel of La Cordelle for a moment of true silence. From there, the students continued climbing, up through the village of Vezelay, to the Basilica. Before entering however, we stopped at the Visitors’ Center and learned about the spiritual and philosophical construction of this UNESCO heritage building: a place dedicated to peace, to light (both physical and spiritual), and to dialogue.

Christopher Kelly provided enthralling explanations of Medieval geometry and astronomy with a demonstration (using lights and a model of Vezelay) of the genius that went into the building of the Basilica as a union of stone (humankind) and grace (God). Mr. Kelly introduced the students to the profound symbolism that permeates every aspect of this edifice. In the afternoon, the sixteen 13-year-olds sketched one aspect of the Basilica that impressed them and then, in a darkened room, they reproduced by “heart-memory” what they had drawn. Finally, they presented both original sketch and “blind” copy to the group who silently viewed them. The effect of the spiritual imprint of the light, forms, and emotion that inspired the first sketch were obvious to everyone in the second.

Finally, it’s important to note that in an age where adolescents are often glued to phones and have difficulty appreciating the depth and wealth of our religious, cultural and spiritual heritage, these sixteen students were attentive and engaged throughout the day. I highly recommend this sight to any teacher wishing to transmit something of Vezelay’s immense beauty and riches to the younger generation. (I would recommend it, in fact, for any person wishing a truly spiritual, inner understanding of the cultural jewel that Vezelay represents.)
