We're bused here from St. Anthony.

"One thousand years ago, an expedition from Greenland landed here and built a substantial camp."

Anne Stine (1918-97) was a Norwegian archaeologist, who discovered the remains of a Norse settlement here, with her husband Helge Ingstad (1899-2001).

We watched a short informative film at the center, then follow a staff on the short path to the site. The sod huts are replica tho.

L'Anse aux Meadows embodies a very interesting piece of history, when the Norse settled here and used this place as a base for exploration of North America approximately a thousand years ago. The visitor's center contains various exhibits and displays about Norse culture and Norse activity in North America. I particularly liked listening to the saga.

There are some guided tours and our guide was kind enough to brave the elements with us (we came in early June) to show us the actual site of the settlement as well as guide us to the recreation of the settlement. The coolest part about this historic site is exploring the rebuilt viking settlement, which has many buildings which one can enter. The staff (dressed like the ancient Norse) provided commentary and demonstrations of the Norse lifestyle (and yes, you can dress like a viking).

I have never visited but it is definitely on my bucket list. I have driven across 8 Provinces in Canada and have nothing but good things to say about the residents and beautiful nature in every Province that I have visited. I love history and would love to spend some time experiencing this amazing look at a Viking (Nordic) settlement in Canada.
I have visited Colonial Williamsburg and imagine that this Park would provide a similar view on Viking (Nordic) life in North America.

This might be the best historical re-creation in Canada. Excellent interpretive centre, amazing guides and docents, the best window into the Norse arrival on Canadian shores.

Definitely worth the drive up. Take a tour with a guide. They have so much more info than you can get just walking the grounds. I had no idea that this area was the place where humans closed the circle. Just wild. Such a cool and significant piece of human history.

Being of Norwegian descent, I was excited to visit this site - the 1,000-year old Viking settlement in North America. It was great to see the excavations of their buildings and the recreated settlement. When in the visitor center, be sure and look at the artifacts that were discovered during the archaeological excavation.

Great piece of history. Although the buildings are recreations of the past buildings you get a good sense of the living conditions of the people who lived here before. The tour guide was well informed with a long history of living in the area. You can spend a long or short time there exploring depending on your fitness level. Handicap access is limited but doable. This is a must see.

Amazing and beautiful natural landscape. Plenty to learn about and educate yourself about this awesome place. Friendly and helpful staff. So peaceful you could hear a pin drop. Just very serene and quiet. DH must've taken a zillon photos with his Nikon, phone cameras may not do it justice. Cannot comment on whether or not tickets are required or if its advisable to purchase in advance, as our visit was part of an excursion we had booked through our cruise ship. Would love to fortunate enough to return. Locals are very lucky to have this in their own backyard.

I really liked the recreated Viking settlement and the visitor center/museum. The original Viking foundations were underwhelming but the park rangers tried to bring them to life. The period actors in the settlement were good, especially the woman cook. There is a fair amount of walking involved on boardwalks, paths and some stairs (not sure about ramps). It was a cool and windy day so sitting around the fire in the longhouse was a nice break to listen to tales.

Our guide to the Viking Village, Mr. Coulbourn, was knowledgeable of the site as he was involved in building the replicated buildings. He also provided insight into how Newfoundlanders live in the area. I totally loved his sense of humour. Well worth the trip!

It's staggering to me that this significant landing sight was only discovered in 1960. Thankfully UNESCO World Heritage List captured this site and its significance on par with the Pyramids.
