Le USS Constitution est le plus vieux navire de guerre encore à flot dans le monde. Il fut construit en 1798 par la marine américaine suite au Naval Act de 1794, qui visait à fournir un armement naval aux jeunes États-Unis, reconnus indépendants par la Grande-Bretagne dix ans auparavant. La construction de six grands navires de guerre fut ainsi autorisée par le Congrès. Ils sont aujourd'hui considérés comme les « frégates originelles de l'United States Navy ». L'USS Constitution fut le troisième à être construit, et est le seul à ne pas avoir été détruit.
La frégate fut baptisée par George Washington, premier président des États-Unis, puis mise en service en juillet 1798. Dotée de 44 canons, sa première mission était la protection de la côte du pays. Puis lorsque commença la période de conflit souvent appelée Quasi-guerre avec la République française, l'USS Constitution eut pour mission de protéger les navires marchands américains contre les attaques françaises, et de dénicher les navires ennemis. Il joua également un rôle clé dans la guerre de 1812 qui opposa les Américains à la Grande-Bretagne, qui se livrèrent à un conflit maritime acharné. La frégate parvint à capturer onze navires ennemis et en détruisit cinq. Les Anglais, irrités de voir que leurs canons ne parvenaient pas à endommager la coque du navire, le surnommèrent « Old Ironsides » (vieux flancs de fer).
Alors que les frégates originelles furent tour à tour détruites par la marine américaine à partir de 1818, la frégate Constitution bénéficia du soutien de la population qui s'opposa à sa destruction. En 1833, elle entra en cale sèche pour subir sa toute première rénovation. Elle devint ensuite un navire amiral et, lorsque sa carrière militaire prit fin en 1855, elle servit de navire-école à Annapolis pendant la guerre de Sécession. En 1907, la Constitution devint officiellement un musée. En tant que navire d'État, elle participe désormais de temps à autre à des cérémonies et événements officiels.
En 2015, le navire a été placé en cale sèche pour subir sa première restauration majeure du XXIe siècle. La restauration a coûté plus de 12 millions de dollars. En 2017, après 26 mois en cale sèche, le navire fit son grand retour dans les eaux de Boston et devrait y rester pour les vingt années à venir.

USS Constitution, also known as Old Ironsides, is a three-masted wooden-hulled heavy frigate of the United States Navy. It is the world's oldest commissioned naval warship still afloat.
It was launched in 1797, one of six original frigates authorized for construction by the Naval Act of 1794 and the third constructed.
The name "Constitution" was among ten names submitted to President George Washington by Secretary of War Timothy Pickering in March of 1795 for the frigates that were to be constructed.
