We booked the Junior Suite with garden view for 4 nights. We were given room 102 which was on the ground floor. The design of the room meant the bathroom has no natural ventilation / window and relied on an exhaust fan.
After the 1st night, we noticed a damp smell / stench which we suspected was mould due to the lack of bathroom ventilation. We asked to switch to another room, given mould is a safety concern and we are travelling with our 4 month old baby but was advised the hotel is booked out. Stel at front desk said that a supervisor and a technician would come to review the room. We went to the beach for a few hours to avoid the room and upon our return, we were told that the technician had fixed it as the bathroom exhaust was previously off and has been switched on. The exhaust masked the smell at the time so we agreed to stay a second night.
However the exhaust only masked the issue, as the damp / mould persists and we could still smell it overnight. On the 2nd morning, we asked to check out as the issue persists and sought a partial refund for the 2 nights we wouldn’t be staying at the hotel. We were informed that the policy required cancellation outside 14 days’ from check-in and under no circumstances would the hotel provide a refund. We asked them to be reasonable as we were not checking-out for change of mind, but because the room we were given poses a health and safety risk, and certainly not commensurate with a 4 star hotel and a room charging 350 euro a night.
At this point, Stel inspected the room and acknowledged that there was a smell, but that was the ‘smell of the island’ which we found incredulous as we have been on the island for 3 days and have not smelt this anywhere else, and certainly not in the hotel nearby that we are now staying in.
In most jurisdictions it is unlawful to charge for a service that is not provided (ie a defective room) and to operate in an unsafe environment. Greece is no different, but this hotel operator appears to have no concerns with either of these issues. We booked this hotel because we wanted to support small hotel operators but found the customer service to be extremely unprofessional and the room unsafe.
In the end, we checked out early and was still charged for the 4 nights, despite not staying for 2 nights and the first 2 nights having been exposed to potential mould and stench. We subsequently stayed at a nearby 5 star hotel which only cost slightly more, but were professional, beachfront (with free daybeds) and most importantly, no stench or mould in or nearby the rooms or hotel property.
As they say, the best way to judge a person is when there is an issue / conflict. Stelia Mare proved to be inexperienced and unprofessional with a focus on revenue only. Do your research and stay elsewhere.
