Located at the south end of the Loch of Strathbeg, St. Mary's Chapel is believed to have been constructed in the early 13th Century AD by the Comyn family. Originally serving as a private chapel for the nearby castle, it is now the sole remnant of the medieval burgh of Rattray. The chapel features a rectangular layout, constructed using grey whinstone with red sandstone framing the openings. By the 16th Century, the chapel fell out of use and was eventually replaced by a new Parish Church located in the village of Crimond, situated to the west.
