The vicinity near Inverness hosts a number of 'Clootie Wells', ancient pilgrimage sites adorned with vividly colored cloths hung on trees. In bygone eras, individuals would come to these wells and springs, dip a piece of cloth in the water, attach it to a branch, and utter a prayer, either directed towards spirits and goddesses in times predating Christianity, or towards saints in later periods. Among these wells, the Munlochy Well, dedicated to St. Boniface, remains in use even now. It is even mentioned in Ian Rankin's novel, "The Naming of the Dead."
